  4. Many of the countries of
  5. South America feature in
  6. a limited way in UK travel
  7. brochures, but the area
  8. remains volatile and attracts
  9. only a small percentage
  10. of the British travelling
  11. public.exceptions to this in
  12. recent times has been a
  13. concerted effort by
  14. Venezuela to develop the
  15. island of Margarite on the
  16. northern coast as a luxury
  17. holiday destination though
  18. first reports from UK
  19. travellers seem to indicate
  20. that it has a long way to
  21. go to reach this status.
  22. Peru receives a small number
  23. of tourists often on Andean
  24. walking holidays visiting
  25. such old Inca sights as
  26. Macchu Picchu.The capital,
  27. Lima has also some good
  28. museums which attract a
  29. steady trickle of visitors.

  31. In Brazil, the coastal
  32. city of Rio with its
  33. famous carnival and
  34. Copacabana and Ipanema
  35. beach have a
  36. sophisticated following
  37. and are also a popular
  38. stop for cruise ships.
  39. However, here as is many
  40. other parts of South America
  41. urban crime remains a
  42. problem for tourists.

  45. some improvements in
  46. recent times, the countries
  47. of South America remain a
  48. fairly exotic destination.
